National Hurricane Center Probability Map shows strong storm on the way…Preparing Your Swimming Pool for the worst hurricane damage….
Initial Determinations: WHO and WHEN
- Realistically assess the situation. Ask yourself: How much time do I have? Remember…the last few hours before a storm is NOT the time to first begin preparing! We usually have at least a few days warning.
- Determine WHO is responsible for preparing your swimming pool for a storm? For example, a commercial pool may employ a combination of their own staff in cooperation with their pool maintenance service company. On the other hand, a homeowner may need to setup preparation steps and responsibilities with their swimming pool maintenance company. If you service, your own pool, then obviously, you are in charge.
Preparing for the Storm: WHAT TO DO
- Do NOT drain your pool completely. An empty pool shell is subject to lateral and hydrostatic forces that may permanently damage the structure. If desired, you may lower the level of the pool…say 12 to 18 inches. Note: it is important to keep a close eye on your pool pump while you are draining the pool. You don’t want the pool pump to lose prime and damage your pump seals. Depending on local site conditions, you should be able to turn off the skimmer or gutter drains.
- Shock or Super chlorinate the pool. (For instructions on How to Shock a Pool.. read How to Shock A Pool)
- Turn off the power to your pool equipment…this means your pool pump, your chlorinator, your controller and Heat Pump. Note it is best to turn the power off at the circuit breaker panel.
- Remove any toys, pool cleaners, loose objects from the pool. Also, store away any swimming pool cleaning equipment.
- Clear the deck of any loose objects that could become projectiles
- Do NOT put your furniture in the pool…there have been too many cases of damaged pool finishes after furniture was removed from the pool after a storm. And, especially, do not put any glass objects in or near the pool. Broken clear glass is impossible to see in the water.
- Do a final walk through…around the pool and deck..Pick up and store any loose objects, remove any overhanging branches, etc.
- Wait for the storm to pass or seek shelter…Whichever is appropriate for your situation.
